Abstract Despite the Government of Botswana’s past and present notable initiatives to make the environment conducive for SMEs and other businesses through such schemes as the Financial Assistance Policy (FAP) and the Citizen Entrepreneurial Development Agency (CEDA), recent studies seem to bemoan the existence of a business environment that still needs a lot of improvement. This study is an expedition to find out, using a more inquisitive approach, the state of affairs for doing business vis-à-vis the performance and competitiveness of the SMEs. As a firm-level survey, the study more closely investigates the SME firms in an attempt to answer questions pertaining to their performance and competitiveness.
