AbstractThis study, ‘Reconfiguration of the Geological Survey’, focuses on the Zimbabwe Geological Survey S which is currently not in its best shape or form and which may need some redirection, transformation or reconfiguration. The report draws from literature research, interviews, questionnaires and study tours. Inadequate funding of Geological Surveys is not unique to Zimbabwe; many wholly-government funded Geological Surveys the world over consider themselves to be under-funded. This has raised three interrelated questions over the years. First, should a nation’s Geological Survey solely rely on government funding? Second, should the Geological Survey ideally be a government department or a semi-autonomous state agency? Third, what other roles apart from traditional mapping of geology and mineral resources can Geological Surveys perform?
