AbstractProfessor Sunungurai Chingarande of Women's University in Africa (WUA) presented an overview of the institution’s development and achievements, supported by the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF) funding over two phases. The project, which spanned from 2007 to 2014 with a total funding of US$5 million, aimed to transform WUA into a world-class university focused on empowering women, particularly adult women, to contribute to Africa’s development. The project’s objectives included enhancing academic curricula with a gender and Africa-wide development focus, improving the teaching and learning environment, strengthening university leadership, fostering regional collaborations, modernizing the library, and providing merit-based scholarships. Significant achievements included curriculum development, the establishment of gender-focused centers, international collaborations with universities across Africa, and the expansion of academic programs. WUA grew from 145 students to over 16,000 graduates by 2024, with 267 staff members across five campuses in Zimbabwe. The university offers over 40 academic programs and has become internationally recognized with students from various countries. Furthermore, WUA developed joint degree programs with ACBF Academy in leadership, agriculture, entrepreneurship, public health, and gender equality. The impact of the ACBF grant has been pivotal in achieving these milestones, positioning WUA as a leading institution in gender and development education. The university’s recognition through national awards and high rankings underscores the progress made toward its goal of becoming a globally competitive institution. Despite its lack of government or church funding, WUA's growth and success exemplify its resilience and commitment to advancing women’s education and empowerment in Africa.
