AbstractThe issue of leadership and good governance is continuously being examined at national and international level with regard to its impact on economic development outcomes. As Africa’s Agenda 2063 and attempts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) gain traction, good governance in African countries remains a topical issue with numerous studies having found that poor governance is one of the banes of development in Africa (Al Bassam 2013, ACBF 2016). It is now crucial for Africa to improve its governance systems and harness what the international community can proffer to promote good governance. This compendium provides scholarly and practical perspectives on this issue. It then puts forward several recommendations towards improving governance systems across the continent and at the country level. It also highlights the capacity needed to improve governance in Africa. The case studies in this compendium address the issue of promoting good governance in Africa, considering country specific characteristics and Africa’s peculiarity at large.
