AbstractConflicts have become a major development issue in Africa and many other countries in the world. Over the last 20 years, nearly half of the member states of the African continent have been involved in one form of conflict or another. In this decade, over one-third of Sub-Saharan Africa was involved in conflict—more than any other part of the world. Besides the loss of life, displacement and dislocation caused by conflicts, there have been substantial long-term implications for increased poverty and delayed development, human and physical capital degradation, and institutional capacity destruction. The causes of conflicts in Africa have been varied, and included ethnic strive, weakening economies, exclusionary economic and social policies, and poor governance.
